Speed events proposals on Lake Windermere – speed limit exemptions

Exemptions now being received for events that exceed the speed limit.

Four applications for exemption have been received by the National Park.

Power Boat Racing in the bay at Broad Leys, Water Skiing for the Disabled at Low Wood, Classic Boat Rally and an attempt to cross the lake on an adapted motor cross bike.  These have been consulted on and the WLUF was supportive of the proposals.  They also  made some recommendations of how the events could be administered to ensure that the events did not detract from the enjoyment of the lake by other lake users.

Navigation Byelaw Review

Please can you contribute to the Windermere Lake Navigation Byelaw review. You can air your views at http://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/windermereconsultation

It is important that we get as many contributions as possible so that the widest spectrum of lake users is represented in the review.

Examples of changes that might desireable are:

  • Clarity of speed limits for rescue craft (e.g. supporting organised swims, sailing races, canoeing events, diving);
  • Scope for undertaking organised powerboating races;
  • Scope for undertaking occasional landing of “sea planes” on the lake (in support of the lakes role in the war time production of the Sunderland Bomber, etc);
  • Scope for the Lake District National Park Authority to give occasional authority for a “breach” of the Byelaws if it is in the public interest to do so (e.g. as above).
